Have you always wanted to be a best-selling author? Or maybe this is a more recent dream you discovered since starting your business? Either way, publishing a book can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. As a publicist, I’ve encountered many aspiring authors, and in that time, I’ve discovered three common mindsets that block writers from publishing a book.
3 Mindset Blocks You Need to Change Before Publishing a Book
- “I don’t know where to start.”
Let’s be honest — this statement is a crutch. No one technically knows where to start in the beginning of anything, but that’s what research is for. Lucky for us, we have an abundance of information right at our fingertips thanks to the internet.
If you want to publish a book, don’t let thoughts like this hold you back. Do your research and contact other people who are doing what you want to do. Then, make a game plan and get started!
- “This is a lot of work to do by myself.”
When you’re publishing a book, you will never be alone. Most authors have an editor, agent, and a publicist working for them, so at the very least, you’ll have three professionals standing in your corner. And that’s not to mention all the support people in your life, such as your spouse, parent, or friend.
- “I’m probably overthinking this. Am I overthinking this?”
Yes. If you have to ask yourself this question, then the answer is yes.
I get it — publishing a book is not an easy feat. It takes time, hard work, and dedication, but so does anything else that’s worth doing. So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed and think the process is overcomplicated, take a moment to step back, breathe, and remember your why.
When writing a book, it’s easy to get held back by negative mindsets, but with a little reframe work, you can fix this. Instead of saying, “I don’t know where to start,” try, “I’m so excited to learn about this process!” See how easy that was? If you learn how to overcome these mental roadblocks, you’ll be so much more successful at publishing a book.
