Pitching the Media Doesn’t have to be Scary – foolproof topics!
You think you have the goods to get yourself, your book, your company, your message out to the world through the media. And you probably do! But you don’t have time to do it yourself or know what topics are going to get the media’s attention, right? That’s where we come in!
Here are some tips on how to focus your topics:
- Start with what’s timely. What are people discussing in your community? What’s being discussed in the media? How can you weigh in?
- Be topical – Can you speak to a National xx day or month or the season that we’re coming up on?
- Make it intriguing! – Highlight how your message/ thoughts are relevant and be clear about what makes it interesting.
Here are some recent client examples of how we used these methods!
Our client Dr. Wayne Pernell is a leadership consultant with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. His topics usually focus on leaders in the business sector, however when the war in Ukraine started, he knew he needed to speak to another kind of leader… the leaders in the home. We helped Dr. Pernell pivot his messaging to speak to parents, the leaders and guides in the home, to help them understand how to effectively talk to children and youth about current events. He snagged numerous radio, television, print, and online interviews from this topic. We stuck to who he was as a consultant, but helped him pivot to meet the current needs of the media and consumers.
Tatiana Tsoir is another great example! She is a CPA and MBA with a passion for helping entrepreneurs, women especially, gain financial security. During tax season, we helped her craft a timely message that took a different look at this often-dreaded period of our lives. Tatiana was featured in Forbes, Marketwatch, Go Banking Rates, and Fox Memphis on last minute filing tips, how to avoid common errors, and what to do if you feel like you’ve made a mistake on your taxes. This may not be her most passionate topic, but she found a way to speak on a timely period in our lives and do so in a way that was interesting and relatable.
