Why Research Is Important When Pitching To The Media
Are you in the beginning phases of pitching to the media?
Even if you’re just thinking about it, here’s something you should know:
It’s really important to get to know the show/publication/podcast you’re pitching to and what they cover. There is nothing more frustrating than putting a lot of time and effort into a personalized email and pitch only to get a one line response saying,”Thank you for your email. We actually just published an article (or did a segment) on this recently, so we’re going to pass right now.”
Has this happened to you?
The first thing you want to do is make sure they haven’t previously covered the topic you are pitching before you send off that email. It’s pretty easy to do a search and make sure you take on a topic that is at least different enough or moves whatever the issue is forward.
So, next time you are planning to write an email and send a pitch, DO YOUR RESEARCH! Here are some questions that may be helpful to you when planning your next pitch:
Do they even cover things like my topic?
What style of writing do they have? Is it more in-depth with research or listicles with short tips?
How can I best convey my expertise to their audience?
After asking yourself those questions, make sure you make all of that clear to the person you’re pitching to in your email.
“This is relevant to your audience because…. (and give an example).”
Of course, this also requires you to do a little digging into who their audience is, but their website or media kit page should make that clear with very little research on your end.
I hear from a lot of people… “I want to get myself out there more, I want media and publicity, but how do I make myself stand out among the crowd? How do I get noticed?”
It’s a great question! It’s not an easy answer, but the good news is… I can help you get started thinking and strategizing now!
When it comes down to it, research is the number one way to get you noticed with producers and editors. I’m not going to sugar coat it, it does take work. Which is exactly why I do what I do. I support entrepreneurs just like you when looking for media publicity by helping them gain clarity around their messaging, composing the pitches, and even sending them out on their behalf!
